Here's a short but detailed guide to being a hero on your University or College campus. All you need is a PC computer and an AIM account. For a quick visual explanation of what i'm proposing, click here.

To be a hero, you must set up a Direct Connect hub. A hub allows an infinite number of users to connect to you and search other peoples' files. As more people connect, more files are available for download. Because everyone is on a LAN, you can download a gigabyte in about 5 minutes. It's quite ridiculous. In a sense, it's Kazaa with zero waiting. It's like Napster without the lawsuits. It's like WinMX without the ping problems. It's like heaven, without the hell.

Assuming you're hoping to set up a potentially illegal file sharing service the speed of your LAN, keep on reading:

  1. You download ptotax hub from HERE. (i've hosted it here)
  2. Or you can use Y-Hub. (a much better hub but trickier to setup)
  3. You install it on your computer (just unzip and put it in your program files)
  4. Open ptotaxhub.exe and use the settings here:
  5. That should work some magic. Under the MOTD blank area, you put the introductory message for your users.
  6. Now you've got the hub up. Next step is publicizing. In your aim profile, put in your current ip address. You can find your ip from going here. Tell everyone. This hub uses very few system resources, because you are only holding the lists of files that other people can search within.
  7. From here, you just have to tell people to download DC++ and connect to your hub.
  8. When people ask how to connect, tell them to fill in information like this after clicking on the favorite hubs star and clicking on new at the bottom of that window that opens up:
*replace xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx with your ip address.
  9. From here, you have a lan speed hub set up. If you shut down your computer, users will be kicked, so plan to keep your computer on for eternity.

notes:

Using ptotax hub, you can create user accounts for added security. This way, you choose who can connect.

If you don't create user accounts or an ip range of acceptable connections, anyone in the world can connect to your hub and generally muck things up.

If you wanna be tricky, you can go to www.no-ip.com and register a redirect account (for free) so that when someone goes to something like undergroundhub.servebeer.com, it redirects to your hub. That way, you don't have to tell people a long ip address, just that easy to remember domain name. The world is yours.

Oh, and by the way, don't share anything that can be bought somewhere else.
