Barack Obamania - Internet Interpretations
March 5th, 2008 3:53 pm
‘Advertising’ that covers non-political aspects of presidential candidates–and focus on more ridiculous ideas and personal matters spread faster across the internet than any health care stance or what-have-you. As the language of politics simplifies, we hold onto and viralize the simple things. What does it say about us? Here’s some examples:
Obama (did personal thing for you…)
A humanizing and simple approach to bringing the untouchable mania of Obama into our lives.

Yes I can - The Tyra Remix
A spoof of ‘Yes we can’ Obama celebfest video. The original video only has the black and white allure of stars we’ve come to know… this spoof comes back at that idea with Tyra’s inane show: a show that’s featured Clinton, Obama, and Huckabee. Each show brought the candidates down to ground level, because what else can you talk about with Tyra but how to sit on a fucking toilet:

And don’t forget Viva Obama
The context in which this video is referenced on political blogs is usually terrible.

Internet Marketing is for Junkies
July 28th, 2007 3:05 am
I spend most of time in the shinyness of web 2.0. A glittery, raised text, and ajaxy valley of opportunity. I’ve got my 208 rss’d sites, and I tend to give sites with names like meebo my complete trust and adoration. But sometimes I wander into web $.7, a world of highlighted text and paypal screenshots.
Like watching an old commercial, entering the back alley where ‘information products’ are sold makes you feel like you’ve been through this pain before. This is trodden territory in web design. It sucked then, and it sucks now. Repeating backgrounds with dollar signs? “AMAZING OFFERS,” and more shitty shitty shit shit. Here’s a wee sample:

It’s a whole different world out there guys. Sadly, this must mean that the split tests have shown that the average credit card account holder prefers the arrow.gif(s) in your faceness with an extra helping of a design rhetoric that expired a long time ago. This is not where advertising has taken us. We have to go back a long time to find the types of styling in the internet marketer’s toolkit. Let’s use the wayback machine to see when Apple.com looked like this: 1997
1997. Like 2,000 B.C. in Cybertime.
Lame Pagans Angered by Simpsons Chalk Mimicry
July 27th, 2007 5:49 pm

Pagans are mad that the likeness of a donut wielding homer has been painted near to a 17th century pagan fertility God known as the Cerne Abbas Giant. Homer appears to be aiming his donut for a certain proboscis.
Ann Bryn-Evans, joint Wessex district manager for The Pagan Federation, said: “It’s very disrespectful and not at all aesthetically pleasing.
“We were hoping for some dry weather but I think I have changed my mind. We’ll be doing some rain magic to bring the rain and wash it away.” [The Sun Online]

Volkswagen Ad + Design Blogs
March 28th, 2007 2:49 pm
I read a few great advertising blogs like Adverbox, PingMag [Japan-based], Design Observer, and Things Magazine (yum).
Here’s a new VW print ad I spotted on Adverbox that struck me as postable:

I posted about unconventional Japanese advertising featured in PingMag here.
Drug Drinks
January 14th, 2007 12:55 am
First, we have Meth Coffee. From their website:
This vibrationical catalyst for upstarts, earthquakes, and brain shifts is roasted for you by a master druggist, bionicalbrain chemist, and coffee viscologist within hours of receiving your order to guarantee maximum potency.
And Cocaine: a caffeinated energy drink with 350% more caffeine than Red Bull. Only dumb blondes need apply. People are really freaked out about this one. It contains 280mg of you know what. I hope the youth of today know of this cocaine thing because this has the potential to be great marketing people! almost as good as Coke…

It’s nice to have drug names newly associated with happy-making products. The sight of those words used to illicit a slightly negative reaction. I want Heroin tea next!
