Soundtrack (Menomena - Posh Isolation) <– came on while I was down here.

Last week I had the opportunity to explore the massive network of inaccessible basement passageways of the California institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, California. I love exploring caves and dark places–but this location contains a long ethnographic record of a most fascinating segment of the population: the top tier science student. I entered through Guggenheim Laboratory’s room 27, and snapped anything I found interesting.

i’m on the jury.
the odds of this happening were about 1 in 85, but I’m somewhat pleased. Sadly, we’re into the ‘time to listen’ part of the case. That’s about all I can say about that. But believe me, I’m taking mental notes and I’ll be posting a massive update about my experience soon.
Also in the works is an unprecedented look at the caves beneath the laboratories at Caltech, the place where Calteckers go to put refreshingly geeky things on walls. Here’s a sample:

I really like the human-mechanistic thinking behind this ‘kindle killer’
Researchers at the University of Maryland at College Park and the University of California at Berkeley have recently unveiled a prototype (pdf) of a dual-display e-book reader. The reader features two detachable screens that can be viewed side by side like an open book, or with one screen folded behind the other like a paperback. The screens can also be flipped to simulate turning the pages of a book.

Check out Simon Lund’s photoset ‘True Love‘ (not on flickr). This is the real stuff, guyzzzz
Not taken by him, but ‘curated’ in the awesome sense of the word:
The photographs here where scanned from 120 negatives found in New York City’s Chinatown by Jana Leo. These are a sample I picked out of around 5,000 negatives.
